Zambeze Delta Conservation

 

The magnificent Zambeze River carves its way into Mozambique and forges a path across this wild country. Through great sand forests, into the transition zone between forest and savannah, across the rich and fertile alluvial floodplain and ultimately merging into the wild Indian Ocean, this delta system is spoken of with reverence reserved for the great rivers of the world. Known by those who understand its critical importance, its history, and the value it brings to the people of Mozambique and beyond, it stands on equal plane with the mighty Mississippi, the great Amazon, the Yangtze, the Nile, the Tigris and the Euphrates.

​The Zambeze Delta was designated as a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance site under the 1971 RAMSAR Convention. Covering over 2.7 million acres, the Delta is “one of the most diverse and productive river-delta systems in the world, with a unique juxtaposition of different landforms, vegetation types and waterbodies that give rise to immense biodiversity value” (Ramsar.org).

It is the goal and mission of Zambeze Delta Conservation Foundation  to conserve this biological treasure for  all of humanity.
